What the magic number is
The magic number is how many leader wins or second-place losses it takes for the leader to clinch the regular season, whatever else happens. Every leader win takes one off it, and so does every loss by the team in second. At zero, the second team cannot catch up even if it wins every game it has left.
The formula: games in the season, plus one, minus the leader’s wins, minus the second team’s losses. In a 14-game season with the leader at 9-2 and second place at 7-4, the magic number is 14 + 1 - 9 - 4 = 2.
The plus one is there because the leader needs one more win than the other team can reach. If both could still finish level, the number is not zero yet: the tie is settled by the league’s rulebook.
Games behind
Games behind say how far a team is from the leader: half the gap in wins plus half the gap in losses. With the leader at 9-2 and second place at 7-4 that is (9 - 7 + 4 - 2) / 2 = 2 games.
A half game shows up when the two teams have not played the same number of games. It is the same arithmetic as the GB column in every league’s standings on RosterMetrix.
Ties, postponed games and short seasons
A tie is neither a win nor a loss, so it does not move the magic number. A postponed game is still part of the season: while it can be played, it counts among each team’s games left.
In an amateur league with few game days the magic number moves fast: with 10 or 12 games, one Sunday can decide first place. Worth checking every week, not only at the end.
In your league, the standings update themselves
On RosterMetrix every result the commissioner approves updates the standings, games behind, streaks and each team’s last ten, along with each game’s forecast and the playoff bracket.
On RosterMetrix each manager loads their team’s sheet, the commissioner approves the game, and averages, ERA, the leaders and every player’s page update on their own.
