Baseball stats in Excel or RosterMetrix: when a spreadsheet is enough
Reviewed October 18, 2026
Plenty of leagues keep their numbers in an Excel or Google Sheets spreadsheet, and it works: it is flexible, you already know it and it costs nothing extra. This page compares that spreadsheet with RosterMetrix, the stats platform for baseball and softball leagues, so you know what you gain and what you give up either way.

What the spreadsheet does well
A spreadsheet asks nobody for permission. You add the columns you want, calculate whatever you like and change it when the league changes its rules. If you already have Excel or Google Sheets, you pay nothing more, and many commissioners keep years of history in that one file.
For a small league, with one person keeping score and few people asking about the numbers, a spreadsheet may be all it takes.
Where the spreadsheet asks for more work
The work grows with the league. Every game has to be copied from the paper sheet to the computer, and it is almost always the same person doing it. Formulas get copied from row to row, and one that slipped changes an average without anyone noticing. For the standings or the leaders you sort, filter and decide by hand who has enough at-bats to qualify.
And for players to see their numbers you send the file, a link or a screenshot, and every copy is out of date as soon as the next game is played.
What changes with RosterMetrix
Each manager enters their own team’s sheet, or the scorer the league assigns enters both, in the app or by sending a photo of the paper sheet, which RosterMetrix reads and turns into stats. Nothing counts until the commissioner approves it, and after that only the commissioner corrects it, with a note.
Once approved, the standings, the leaders, every player’s page and the box score update on their own. Rate stats come from one formula for the season, a team, a phase or any filter, and need a minimum to make the leaderboard. Everything reads well on a phone, in English or Spanish, at your league’s address, with no account.
If the league wants to score live, the scorer follows the game pitch by pitch on a phone and the score shows on the league’s pages while the game is played.
Your spreadsheet is not lost
If you already have years of data in Excel, send us the file: we move your historical records onto the platform at no cost, and we load your teams, rosters, logos and schedule from whatever you send.
And if you want to keep your Excel but stop typing, the RosterMetrix Anotador scores the game on your phone, even with no signal, and gives you an Excel file for each game. It comes with 3 free games; after that it is USD 10 a month.
When the spreadsheet is the better fit
If your league is small, one person keeps score and enjoys it, and nobody asks to see the numbers on a phone, the spreadsheet is free and lets you do things exactly your way. It is also the better fit if you track stats no program calculates and you do not want to depend on anyone to change them.
When RosterMetrix is the better fit
If you want to share the work among the managers without losing control, because the commissioner approves every sheet. If the league scores on paper and nobody wants to type. If players and families ask about their numbers and you want them to see them on a phone, with the standings and leaders up to date.
An adult league pays USD 45 per team per season in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico, and USD 10 everywhere else; a youth league pays USD 50 per team per year in those three countries and USD 30 elsewhere. A new league’s first two game days are free. To get started, message Osmany on WhatsApp or through the Contact form. RosterMetrix does not supply scorers: the sheets are entered by the managers or by your league’s scorer.
